Five things we’d rather leave in 2015

The time has come once again to reflect on the year past. Jan. 1, 2015, catapulted us on a roller coaster full of unexpected twists and turns. From the introduction of Caitlyn Jenner to the social justice demonstrations on MU’s campus, this year has been packed with change. In the spirit of continuing this trend of change and encouraging self-improvement, I thought it only right that we discuss some of the things we’d rather leave in 2015.

We couldn’t properly reflect on this year if we didn’t address all the truly annoying people and things that made it nearly intolerable. Here’s the shortlist of we’d prefer not to carry into the shiny new year:

Donald Trump

Just imagine what it must be like to be so ridiculously wealthy and bored that you wake up one morning and say, “What the hell? I think I’ll run for president.” From his statement that Mexico is bringing “crime, drugs and rapists” into our country to his intention of building a wall along our borders to keep “illegal” immigrants out of the United States, it’s truly remarkable how Mr. Trump is still walking around with both feet in his mouth. I’ve only got two words for Donald Trump and his hideous toupee: You’re fired.

High fashion cornrows

Cultural appropriation took a new form this year when cornrow braids were “discovered” by fashion designers and deemed as edgy and chic on runways. It is no secret that African-American women have been rocking these braid for decades. They have always been considered an indicator of urban roots and associated with “ghetto” neighborhoods, but, when adorning the head of Kendall Jenner, these braids have gotten a new reputation as trendy and cute. Let’s give credit where credit is due, shall we? Although imitation is the highest form of flattery, I’d rather “rediscovery” of this style be left in the dust of 2015.

“Cheerleader” by Omi

The song that eventually penetrated my soul with its relentless catchy tune. It is with a heavy heart that I admit to having sung along to this song at a recent party, but it must be shed like the guilty pleasure it is before I enter 2016. Here’s hoping Omi’s cheerleader will be there when he needs her because I refuse.

“The Dress”

Is it gold and white? Is it black and blue? Is it relevant at all? The most annoying thing about this mini phenomenon was the way news media treated it as if it was actual news.

“We’ll discuss ethnic cleansing in the Dominican Republic later, but first I must get my co-anchor Sharon’s opinion on the dress that has been dominating the Twitter feeds of pre-teens nationwide.”

Meek Mill

Personally I believe Mr. Mill would agree with his inclusion on this list. Who would want to go into a new year after being annihilated on not one, but TWO diss tracks by Drake. We suggest Meek takes this year to step away from Twitter and improve his rapping skills. Give us a call once you get off your girl’s tour.

What were you annoyed with this year? Let us know in the comments!
